Flat die pelleting machine: The art of extrusion with flat dies and pressure rollers

In biomass energy, organic fertilizer, and feed processing, flat die pelleting machines occupy an important position due to their simple structure and reliable performance. They reshape powder into cylindrical pellets through “die extrusion.”

The core components of a flat die pelleting machine are a horizontal disc die and a freely rotating pressure roller. As the pressure roller revolves, it evenly presses the material into the die holes of the flat die. Under extrusion pressure, the material is extruded through the die holes into strips, which are then cut into uniform pellets by a cutter. The reasonable gap between the pressure roller and the flat die ensures stable extrusion pressure, reduces wear, and extends die life.

This process is a dry extrusion molding method, typically requiring no added water or binders, relying on the interwoven fibers of the material itself to form the pellets. This characteristic gives it a significant advantage in the biomass energy field—wood chips, straw, etc., can be directly compressed into fuel pellets after crushing. During extrusion, the material temperature naturally rises, softening the fibers. The pellets, after extrusion, are compact, have a smooth surface, and are less prone to moisture regain after cooling, facilitating storage and automatic feeding.

Flat die pelleting machines are highly adaptable to various raw materials, making them suitable for materials with high fiber content and viscoelasticity. In the organic fertilizer industry, they can compress well-rotted livestock and poultry manure into slow-release granular fertilizer; in feed processing, they are commonly used to compress grass powder pellets or for self-prepared feed by small and medium-sized farms.

Flat die pelleting machines, with their precise molds and robust mechanical force, transform loose powder into high-value granular products, providing a reliable and economical granulation method for small and medium-scale production.
